How to fish for pike?
Latin name : Exos Lucius .
Family : Esocidae .
Size : On average from 50 cm to 1 meter (up to 1.50 meters for some specimens).
Weight : On average from 2 to 8 kilos (up to 20 kilos for some specimens).
Considered as the king of the carnivores because of its power and its combativeness, the pike can be found in all the waters of Europe. It will be easy for you to recognize it, with its greenish and yellow colors and its fusiform body, you will not be able to miss it. Lebrochet is armed with a formidable jaw of 700 teeth (just that).
Nylons for pike fishing
A low elasticity fluorescent nylon with a diameter of 24 to 30/100 (even 35 or 40/100 for very congested stations).
With a revolving spoon for pike fishing
It's really the beginner's decoy. All you need is a good rod, a reel with a fixed drum as seen above with a nylon of 30 or 35/100 and an assortment of spoons including the indispensable Suissex with red pompom, the Mepps Aglia and the Lusox. The spoons will be preceded by a metal leader (short steel or very large fluro-carbon leader designed to resist the teeth of some predators) on which you will sometimes have threaded a hoof lead to fish more hollow. The size of the spoons can vary from n°3 to n°5 and their tones are preferably silver or gold. The mother-of-pearl is just as effective.
The technique of the revolving spoon is both simple and effective. All you have to do is to throw in front of you (near an herbarium or a submerged tree, it's even better) and to bring back more or less slowly by varying the speeds but without any other particular manoeuvre.
At the popper for pike fishing
A fishing that can give excellent results, it is to our taste the most spectacular, the attacks of these fearsome predators are always of extreme violence.
The popper is a kind of large float with a concave nose, armed with one or two triple hooks that you throw as close as possible to what seems to be a pike post. The fishing action is relatively simple : you just have to bring back by jerks this float lure, each pull of the line producing a mini-gob of water, or more efficiently a mini-wave due to the meeting of the concave nose and the surface of the river or pond. The pike will rush on the lure which it will have sometimes followed to the boat or to the shore during the haul-out. The attack is so brutal that it often happens that the fish misses its prey especially when it falls back on the Popper after its jump . Do not hesitate to try your luck a second time, because your opponent will not hesitate to try his luck again. A good popper measures between 5 and 10 cm long and comes alive at the slightest request. Note also that small models also attract big poles.
Tip : Don't popper too hard and above all observe a few seconds break between shots : it's often on a completely immobile lure that the attack occurs.
The pike moves little, so don't neglect the work of spotting.
Opt for a reliable and solid equipment.
When you choose a steel horsehair leader, it must be flexible and discreet.
Think of using bait of about fifteen centimetres if you want to increase your chances of stinging a good-sized opponent.
Always be very attentive during your fishing game, the hits can sometimes be discreet, whatever the size of the fish.
Reminder : Pike teeth are dangerous, be careful.
